What does a school counselor do? §
GUIDANCE LESSONS - Counselors help students develop educational potential through
lessons & activities to assist in developing competency in:
responsible behavior, communication, motivation, developing
self-confidence, decision-making and goal-setting, interpersonal and
cross-cultural skills. §
RESPONSE SERVICES
- Counselors intervene on behalf of students whose immediate personal
concerns or problems put their continued educational, career, personal, or
social development at risk. A counselor’s primary task is to provide
counseling to students individually or in
group settings. They also consult with teachers, parents, and
administrators on behalf of students. §
INDIVIDUAL PLANNING - Counselors work with students as they plan, monitor,
and manage their own educational, career, personal, and social
development. Counselors assist students with personal planning, transition
activities, and goal setting. §
CAMPUS TESTING & 504 COORDINATOR How do I get to see the counselor? §
A student may access the counselor by: Self-referral, Teacher referral, Parent
referral, Administrative or other staff referral, or Referral by a friend What are the credentials for school counselors? ·
Have
earned a Master’s Degree ·
Have
at least 2 years teaching experience ·
Have
passed a state mandated test
(ExCET
for School Counselors) ·
Received
certification from the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC). Check the counselor’s bulletin board for opportunities for
community service, contests, meetings and other important information!
